Jane Meredith Whitten: Basketry Knitting
I’ve been knitting since childhood and experimenting with basketry since the mid-1990s. Islands fascinate me and I’ve tried to recreate their magic with my islets. I handknit forms and encrust them with sands I have collected on my wanderings. They aren’t waterproof but aren’t breakable. Traditionally basketmakers gather from their surroundings. I collect rejected industrially made materials around my urban environment - plastic strapping, electrical cables, garden hoses, telephone wire, etc - and create one of a kind baskets.
