Pastimes PEI Rug Hooking Studio: Shirlee Hogan
I am a contemporary rug hooker working with traditional tools, techniques and materials. I often work with textured wool fabric and hand dye Island made wool yarn for my projects. My color palette is based on the glorious colors of Prince Edward Island. I often use sheep’s wool that has been milled locally. My hooked pieces are simple in design and I prefer to hook subjects and patterns that have a timeless quality.
Early settlers on Prince Edward Island used rags for their “mats” using natural dyes with recipes and patterns handed down through the generations. They were creating useful items for their homes. Many of today’s rugs are decorative as well as useful: floor mats, wall hangings, cushion covers, teapot stands. I am happy to be carrying on an Island tradition that knows no limits.
